This is to become air nomads, moving from Homo economicus to Homo Flotantis, who is attuned to planetary rhythms, who is conscious of living with other humans and non-humans and who learned to float in the air and drift with the wind.
Tomás Saraceno, The Aerocene Manifesto
Inspired by the Aerocene Manifesto, Pizzicati is a performance in the interactive installation of Tomás Saraceno: ALGO-R(H)I(Y)THMS, spread across 13.000 sq.m museum space at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2018. His installation asks us to rethink how we build interactions with our surroundings, consisting of hundreds of strings, each resonating at different frequencies. As it enables its audience to become a part of an ongoing jam session, I wanted to create a musical piece within this cosmic spider web, using this opportunity to improve my research into rhythms in relation to synchronized time and social interactions.
During a workshop run by IED graduate Grace Pappas, I started with mapping out the entire installation to find out the corresponding musical notes on each string. Then, I improvised a composition, singing a melody based on the strings I defined as core notes of the piece. This experience allowed me not only to use notation as a way of creating movement but it also gave me a chance to explore the nature of resonance.
